Every incentive in this trade runs the other way. Ours does not.
A shop paid on tire volume has a reason to call a repairable puncture unrepairable, to quote four when two would do, and to say nothing about how long a "new" tire sat in a warehouse. New York Tire Shop says all three out loud, and each one costs us money.
- The build date, read out loud
- The last four digits of the DOT code are the week and year the tire was made. Rubber ages whether or not it turns, and a chain shipping from a central warehouse does not know the age of the stock on the truck. We do, and we tell you.
- Repaired, not replaced
- A puncture in the crown under 1/4 in gets a patch-plug. That is a small job instead of a new tire, and it is the first thing we check.
- Two tires, when two is right
- All-wheel drive genuinely needs matched circumference. Most cars do not. We look up your tolerance in front of you rather than quoting four by reflex.
- The warranty read plainly
- Most road-hazard cover pays against remaining tread and excludes mounting, balancing and disposal. If it is worth buying we say so. If it is not, we say that too.
